May 17 - 20, 2015 Louisiana Bird Photo Tour

A photography tour focusing on nesting wading birds in South Western Louisiana. Southwestern Louisiana has an abundance of wading birds and the tour is scheduled to coincide with the birds nesting. We will be visiting several bird rookeries giving unparalleled access to these beautiful birds. Several of the Rookeries are accessed by boat and the remainder are located an easy access from the road.

Also on the agenda is photographing nesting Osprey in a natural setting. The birds nest atop Cypress tress in the Atchafalaya Basin.

The tour is $1099 and includes a morning brown bag meal. Registration is available here. The tour is run from the Bois Des Chenes Bed and Breakfast in Lafayette. Reservations are not included in the price, a brunch is provided for those staying at the bed and breakfast. Please contact me for details.

October 15, 2013 Introduction to Bird Photography

Bird photography is both challenging and enjoyable. This course will explore this interesting subject and includes:

  1. Where to photograph birds, in Louisiana and throughout the country. We are fortunate in the state to have a habitats for many species. In addition, some of the best locations throughout the country will be explored.
  2. Types of birds to photograph. From sea birds, to wading birds to song birds.
  3. Techniques, from photographing at a bird feeder to birds in flight. Both using natural light and flash.
  4. The equipment required, from the simplest setups to sophisticated professional equipment, what to choose and how to use it.

Examples of photographs will be presented as well as the stories behind getting the shots. Equipment will be shown and setup. Techniques will be discussed and demonstrated.

This class will be held in New Orleans at the New Orleans School of Art and Craft

With the recent iPhone the quality of pictures you can take revels that taken with traditional point and shoot cameras. The always with you nature of the iPhone lends itself to grabbing shots missed in the past because you don't have a camera. This course will examine the iPhones camera and will explore how you can make the most of it. The course will also explore various camera apps and their advantages.
