On March 23 and 24th, I visited Lake Martin and Cazan Lake in preparation for the 2022 bird tours.
Several notes from the trip.
- Cazan Lake has many nesting birds and will be in full swing for the April and May tours.
- The Sunset area at Lake Martin has been mowed and is in much better shape than it was for the November tours, all the tall grass has been cut, and it's easier to get a clean shot of the trees. However, they also mowed all of the wildflowers. The decking has also been replaced around the boat launch, making access there safer.
- The Southern section of the road at Lake Martin is closed from the southern entrance to the Lake for over 1 mile, the road was washed out, it appears they don't plan to repair it. The visitor's center appears to be closed with no parking places available, so the only access is by foot from the barricades to the north. I hiked in, and while the birds were closer, they were still too far to photograph.
- The trail on the north side of Lake Martin is clear, and I observed a pair of Pileated Woodpeckers at close range. Having only an iPhone with me at the time, I didn't get any shots.
- I met with Kim Voorhies of The Atchafalaya Experience, and he has many good Osprey nests for us to photograph at Henderson Swamp.
- I visited Rip's Rookery, and there were very few birds. The smaller pond has virtually no Island left, and the large pond is also now eroding. I don't plan on going there for the tours.
