Hello, dear friends and fellow photography enthusiasts!
Welcome to the July 2024 edition of the Charles Bush Photography Newsletter. This month, I have some personal updates and exciting news to share.
Cataract Surgery: A New Vision
I've opted to undergo cataract surgery during the slow summer months to address my vision issues. Just 48 hours ago, I had my first eye surgery, and the results are astounding. I can now see through the viewfinder of my Z8 as well as, if not better than before.
I chose mono-focal lenses for the surgery. While multifocal lenses can reduce dependency on glasses, they often create halos around bright objects and can impair night vision—something no photographer wants.
This surgery has significantly impacted how I edit images. The eye without surgery sees colors as much more yellow, leading me to possibly make images too blue. Conversely, the eye with the new lens sees much sharper, which might have caused me to over-sharpen my photos. I'm now seeing details I haven't seen in some time, and it’s supposed to get even better as my eye heals. The other eye will be done in two weeks; I can't wait.
Why Undergo Surgery?
My deteriorating vision made driving and seeing my computer screen increasingly difficult. Now, with my vision much improved, I realize I should have had this surgery sooner.
Seeing Wide Versus Long
I’ve always gravitated toward telephoto views, but this experience has encouraged me to explore wide-angle shots. It’s a good exercise to see things differently. For instance, I captured sunset images at Miller's Lake using wide (24mm) and long (600mm) lenses to highlight the same scene from different perspectives. The results are fascinating and emphasize the diverse beauty of our natural world.

Photo Downloading Software
I wanted to share some insights on photo-downloading software. Photo Mechanic has moved to a subscription model, which has become quite expensive. As an alternative, I’m evaluating Fast Raw Viewer. Stay tuned for more details on how it performs and whether it might fit your workflow well.
